One Piece

The live action version of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda‘s manga among the most widely read in the history of Japanese comics, surprised me.

The first season of the pirate saga elaborated and realised by Matt Owens (Luke Cage) and small screen veteran Steven Maeda is successful, full of action and feelings.

And it is perhaps the giving of space to feelings that made the transposition successful.

Not least the choice of shots and jokes taken from the original.

The choice of cast, all adequate to the parts, is excellent.

This time, Netflix did things right, certainly thanks to a high budget it lost to recreate rich environments that made everything as close to the original as possible.

I think Netflix understood the risk of creating a series on One Piece, with millions of fans around the world an eventual flop would have been a big snub for the streaming giant.

So it tried to field a big budget for once, knowing full well that, on the contrary, a success would be a new point in favour of its ability to create good original content after so many series that have only served to fill its catalogue.

Well done Netflix.
